When purchasing a toddler desk you should ask two important questions to guide you in your purchasing decision:

    Which weight class do I need?

    Which option will mount and can I use in my car?

Which toddler seat you should buy depends mainly on the weight of your child. For each weight group is also an age indicator, but they are only approximate. Some children are simply bigger and heavier than others at the same age. Therefore below are some of the different types of toddler seats that can be mounted in the car as well.

Types of toddler seats

Toddler seats are divided into groups and each group is suitable for a different weight class. On the chart below you can see what kind of seat is appropriate for the weight and the main characteristics of the different groups.

Group 0 and 0 + - Group 0 (up to 10 kg, from 0 to about 9 months). This group is hardly sold in most kids stores.

Group 0 + (up to 13 kg, from 0 to approximately 1 year) - These toddler seats are installed in the reverse direction, so the child sits with his back to the driving direction. This position provides more support to the head and neck of the child in a frontal collision. The confirmation of the toddler seat is usually with the seat belt, but there are several seats with a subframe in the car behind you and the seat snaps. This support will also put the seat belt using ISOFIX mounting points. Most Isofix seats are suitable from group 0 + have a base, but there are also Isofix seats without chassis on the market;

Note:

Due to the large overlap in weight between group 1 and group 0 +, small children are too early to be placed in a 'forward looking' child seat. While it is safer if the child is back in the direction of travel. So wait with switching until your child is too heavy (over 13 kg for a 0 + seat) or long (when the head above the edge of the seat comes out).

In Scandinavia, most children are much longer, often up to 4 years old. The main advantage of this position is the increased protection at a (frontal) collision.

Group 1 - Group 1 (9 to 18 kg / approximately 9 months to 4 years). This child is usually in the direction of the car, sometimes looking back. The seats are usually put down to the 3-point belt, but there are also several Isofix seats for this group on the market. The child is put down in the seat supported by a sticky toddler desk.

Group 2 (from 15 to 25 kg / from about 3 to 6 years) and group 3 (from 22 to 36 kg / approximately 6 to 12 years): Group 2 and 3 are almost always combined into a single seat. This type of booster seats is where the child (and seat) is directly in the position with the belt put down. Because the child is higher, the seat belt fits better. The group 2 booster seats are usually and preferably have a (removable) back as the main support and guided with the belt. A booster seat comes with headrest and bolsters (side wings) is preferred because of better protection in side impacts.
